For Immediate Release

L.A. resident walks 400 miles for health and for charity.

Los Angeles, CA – On Monday, May 10th, 2010, L. A. resident Kim Olpin started a 39 day journey to walk 400 miles to reclaim her health and raise money for the non-profit Floating Doctors. The mission of Floating Doctors is to bring free health care to the most distant and remote communities in the world. Inspired by this effort Kim set a personal goal to raise funds in support of this cause while taking back control of her own health. To reach her goal of walking 400 miles (1 mile for every 500 miles Floating Doctors is expecting to sail on their mission this year) she will attempt to travel throughout the greater Los Angeles area completely by foot. In a city defined by urban sprawl and a tangled web of freeways, Kim is taking on the unique goal of getting where she wants to go by “Walking in L.A.” Her goal will require her to cover the equivalent walking distance from the Staples Center to Hollywood Sign the every day for over five weeks. As part of her journey, Kim is keeping a journal of her travels that is available for all to read on her blog at wellnesswalkabout.com. She hopes to raise $100,000 for Floating Doctors through pledges and donations that can be made at www.firstgiving.com/wellnesswalkabout.

About Kim Olpin:

Kim Olpin is 33 year old woman who has battled with her weight her entire life. She has always enjoyed a variety of sports including hiking, swimming, kayaking, and rugby, but she has always struggled to keep her weight down. Time, age, and injuries have all contributed to transforming her weight problem into an obesity problem. Kim is active in community organizations; she volunteers regularly with Treepeople, and helps organize Friend of the Los Angeles River’s annual river clean up. When Kim decided that she wanted to help Floating Doctors, she realized that this was a once in a lifetime opportunity to improve her own health while having a positive impact on those less fortunate than herself. Kim currently resides in Hollywood, CA.

About Floating Doctors:

Floating Doctors is a 501c3 non-profit medical relief team dedicated to reducing the present and future burden of disease in the developing world and promoting improvements in health care delivery worldwide.

A dedicated crew will be setting sail on a 12-month medical relief voyage this year to the coast of Central America and the eastern Pacific aboard their 76′ sailboat, the Southern Wind. In each country, Dr. Ben LaBrot and his crew will use a unique combination of traditional medicine and cutting-edge technology to provide preventative medicine and health education to over 15,000 patients, while also coordinating a network of visiting physicians and medical students from around the world.

Floating Doctors is the world’s first globally mobile medical team to utilize a green energy platform—the expedition sailboat Southern Wind—to deliver medical relief to thousands of people in the most remote coastal areas of the world. While delivering preventative medicine and education, Floating Doctors will leave no carbon footprint, but only long lasting health benefits in her wake.
