About
On May 10th, 2010, I began a 39 day walk to raise money for Floating Doctors. Floating Doctors is a fabulous non-profit who’s goal is to bring free health care to the most remote and isolated communities in the world. For 39 days I will walk everywhere, with a goal of walking 400 miles, 1 mile for every 500 Floating Doctors is expecting to sail on their mission this year. I will walk to work everyday (4.9 miles one way) and to the store and to meet my friends. Except in case of an emergency, I will walk around Los Angeles for 39 days. I have nicknamed this my “Wellness Walkabout”.
Floating Doctors was started by my friend Dr Ben La Brot. He has spent the last two years of his life working to make this a reality, and in April Floating Doctors set sail on their maiden voyage. Already they have helped numerous people in Haiti, even bring desperately needed building supplies to the decimated island.
Inspired by Ben’s courage and vision I began looking for a way to support Floating Doctors. I raised a little money last fall, but I wanted to do something that would make a significant difference. I want to do something that will get them much more attention and raise a significant amount of money. I also hope to join them on the boat later this year, physically helping them in this amazing mission.
I realized that to help Ben and the whole crew I also needed to do something to help myself. If I am going to ask people to give me money to help bring health care to people around the world, then maybe I should look at my own health as well. I am just like millions of Americans, I am obese. I’ve known for a long time that I needed to do something about my weight, but I’ve been unable to find the motivation. Sometimes I need a goal greater then myself to make me change.
Everyday I will post stories, pictures and videos about my walks. I will share updates about Floating Doctors and about my health. I hope you will follow my story and give generously to this amazing organization. Please visit the blog regularly. I encourage comments and questions; I would love to have a dialogue with anyone following my journey. Feel free to share this blog with all your friends and help me spread the word.
Most importantly I ask that you help me help Floating Doctors. Please donate to my First Giving fundraising page. I hope to raise $100,000. Please help me support this amazing cause.
About Floating Doctors:
